This film from 1973 is based on the true story of an assassination attempt on Charles de Gaulle in 1962. Directed by Fred Zinnemann, it is probably the best assassination genre film ever done. The film handles skillfully the machinations of the plot to kill including: disgruntled OAS veteran officers out to get rid of de Gaulle, the killer for hire-The Jackal, the police in both England and France on the trail of the elusive Jackal including a rumpled but brilliant detective, the politicians especially one who likes to "pillow talk" to his new lover-a beautiful OAS agent, the shady underground of those who provide The Jackal with what he needs and a few unfortunate civilians who cross paths with The Jackal. Brilliantly filmed in many locations in England and Europe which gives the film an authentic look. At 2 hrs and 23 min. it moves at the pace needed to investigate all the intricacies of the story. "The Day Of The Jackal" is a great film and one worth viewing more than once. The film has been restored and wide screen formatted for this DVD version. Five stars.

Funny. Me not the movie. In 1962 I was 16 years old. I can't remember hearing about anything to do with anything else but myself. and my future. I heard of this movie and storyline but gave it a pass everytime it came up. I finaly gave in last week and got it from the library and found it quite good. No 007 action but a wonderfull action just the same. Quite believable and kept me intranced all the way. I think I'll read the book now and see where that takes me. When I find a copy I'll buy it for my collection.

War demands & costs extraordinary prices, paid by the lives of citizens & their dear families. As ALL wars breed internal RESENTMENT & CONFLICTS, this film is LITERALLY based on the French Military DEFEAT in Algeria. While the film still is very captivating story of the Cold-war-era of 1960s political & military CONFLICTS, (NON Allied French & Western European NATO, desperately trying to CONTAIN the expansion of Communist East European & Soviet WARSAW), from CONTROLLING THE WORLD, the film distorts the fact that the FRENCH were militarily defeated & forced out of Algeria & Vietnam, forcing the FRENCH VETERANS to form OAS & plot against General De Gualle. When the French military veterans (OAS), failed to kill De Gualle for his failure in Algeria & Vietnam, importing professional killer from England made the mission more complicated & difficult, helping De Gualle survive the OAS plot. STILL VERY CAPTIVATING FILM!

A tense, cerebral film that's expertly acted. I can't think of a better espionage thriller. Don't let the subject matter (the attempted assassination of Charles de Gaulle) deter you. The movie is about the Jackal - and how he kills his prey (or attempts to kill it). It's also about the good guys trying to catch him. Charles de Gaulle just happens to be the target.

Mallinson: "There's no question of Her Majesty's Government ever conceding the fact that this Jackal was an Englishman. So far as one can see, there was a period when an Englishman came under suspicion, but he has now been cleared. Certainly, the Jackal masqueraded as an Englishman, but he also masqueraded as a Dane, and as a Frenchman. So there's no way of proving his identity at all." Inspector Thomas: "But if the Jackal wasn't Calthrop, then who the hell was he?"
